The Problem
Yellowbook, an online learning platform aimed at government auditors looking to continue their education, approached us with an existing website that was running unusually slow. As the site’s speed was negatively affecting the learning experience provided to users, the client decided to enlist the help of our expert developers. We were happy to provide our services.
Our Solution
Our team executed an in-depth analysis of the Yellowbooks website to determine the source of its performance issues. Upon further inspection, we found many pieces of unnecessary plugins and add-ons bloating the site, ultimately causing a slowdown. We then created a plan to remove these plugins without impacting the live site, as users were actively using it for educational purposes.
What We Did
Code Review
We examined our client’s website’s code line by line, identifying any inefficiencies in its codebase that could be impacting the website’s overall performance. By reviewing its codebase, we were able to determine which areas needed improvement to boost the site’s speed.
Plugin Review
As a WordPress website, plugins made up a large part of the platform’s functionality. However, upon review, we discovered that many plugins were serving little to no purpose other than slowing the website down. We then removed all unnecessary plugins, opting to replace them with lightweight custom code.
Custom Code Implementation
We were able to replace several pieces of core functionality held by plugins by implementing custom code. Replacing third-party plugins with lightweight custom code gave the platform an immediate speed boost, ensuring a heightened user experience.
