These days, getting help on a website is as common as hiring a plumber or an electrician. For those of you who have looked around and noticed that some people advertise as web designers and others are web developers, is there a difference? It seems everyone has a website, whether a business advertising service or just someone blogging about their lives.
A casual survey reveals that most people consider the two terms to be the same. But there is still a class of people who like to categorize *everything* as clearly as possible. For them, there IS a difference.
To understand the difference, you have to understand the tools available to people today. When the internet first came about, the only way to create web pages was by hand-coding HTML and CSS. However, continued advances in technology have enabled people to use drag and drop editors such as Wix, Weebly, or Squarespace to create websites. And besides this, people use tools such as WordPress to build sites. And making things even simpler for WordPress are the advents of page builders such as Elementor, Oxygen, Fusion Builder, etc. that allow people to create sites with arguably no coding. It’s not quite like drag and drop builders but you can build a very nice site with just HTML or CSS. In fact, sometimes you don’t even need that.
Because of all these tools, the amount one can do for websites increases while the required technical ability decreases. Hence our belief is that a web designer is one that can design or make websites but is not necessarily a programmer. Web designers may focus more on the design features of websites.
Granted this is very important work. The average consumer doesn’t care but
On the other hand, it is our premise that web developers are those that are able to code when necessary. These people may also have design capabilities but also have the ability to add custom functionality to websites. Web developers are more likely to use WordPress instead of drag and drop builders like Wix. And they may even create custom code sites using pure HTML/CSS, PHP, or other programming languages.
But there are even drag and drop editors for WordPress too.
